What is Acton Academy?
Acton Academy Peachtree Corners provides an approach to learning that unlocks a child’s wonder, confidence, and purpose. We allow the natural curiosity of children to guide their learning and keep learning fun. Children are valued, respected, and given options for meaningful work. We focus on what our learners need to learn – reading, writing, mathematics, and the history and scientific wonders of our world – and then learning what they love. What is the goal of school?
For our youngest learners, it is for them to be kind, responsible, and curious. Academics are experienced through exploration, play, and asking questions. Academic rigor is added later as well as real-world experiences to discover a next great adventure for every child. To borrow from Frederick Buechner, the goal of school is to find where the deep gladness of a child intersects with our world’s deep hunger. To find a calling that will change the world. “What if children were far more capable than we’ve ever imagined?”
Our Promise to you
Through Socratic guiding and experiential learning we encourage every child to:
- Begin a Hero’s Journey
- Develop a kind and strong character
- Become a curious, independent, and life-long learner
- Cherish the arts, the physical world, and the mysteries of life
- Discover what they love and how that can help the world
“Learning is a process of discovery rather than a conveyance of information.”
Learning
Design
At Acton Academy, we believe that learning to learn, learning to do, and learning to be are far more important than the emphasis placed on learning to know. The experience and achievement of excellent work is better than any grade on a test.
Learn to Learn
Socratic Discussions and self-paced challenges equip young heroes to be independent lifelong learners.
Learn to Do
Hands-on quests for Science, Entrepreneurship, and the Arts prepare children for apprenticeships and real-world challenges.
Learn to Be
The Hero’s Journey, relational covenants, and real world consequences transform difficult decisions into virtuous habits.
Core Skills
Reading, writing, and math are explored through nature, Montessori-inspired work, engaging online programs, and learning through play.
Quests
Hands-on projects and Anji-inspired play help children learn the skills needed to solve real world problems.
Critical Thinking
Deep Socratic discussions about difficult choices build critical thinking skills and the ability to powerfully think, write, and speak.
Measuring Mastery
Young heroes create a learner-driven community that celebrates the mastery of concepts, skills, and character by earning badges and participating in public exhibitions throughout the year.
Learners use badges, instead of grades, to track academic progress in core skills like reading, writing, mathematics, and spelling. Character development is tracked through Servant Leader Badges, which celebrate warm-hearted and tough-minded decisions that build character.
Young heroes deliver public exhibitions of their work at the end of each four to six week session. This proof of quality work is used in placed of tests.
Self-management and self-governance skills are measured by peer reviews at the end of each session. Running Partners and Squads encourage our heroes to set goals and hold each other accountable. Children are learning both personal responsibility and how to collaborate and work as part of a team.
