Learning Design

Core Skills

The mornings at Acton Academy contain a section of time for work in core skills such as reading, writing, and mathematics. Time is given to allow self-paced mastery in the subjects. We often incorporate the latest in educational technology such as Khan Academy or Montessori-inspired work such as Wild Math.

Quests

The afternoons at Acton include hands-on collaborative quests, which help children to master the skills needed to solve real world problems. Teamwork is learned and subjects such as history and science are explored although the children are simply playing games and going on adventures.

Free Play

For our youngest learners, afternoons are reserved for play, which is a natural learning platform for children to explore and make observations and conclusions. Loose parts, that don’t have a specific purpose like tree logs, wooden spools, scrap wood, bins or baskets, ladders, tires, even bamboo rods, give children the freedom to be creative with their own rules and designs, allowing the focus to be on the process rather than the final product.
